Paramedical Technician

The fire and emergency technology program prepares students for entry-level employment and job upgrades in fire services and emergency medical fields. By completing the degree or certificate requirements, students will gain the ability to apply the principles of fire combat, fire protection organization, fire prevention, fire behavior, and building construction. Students will also gain proficiency in emergency medical assistance and in the handling of hazardous materials and emergency vehicles and apparatus. Competencies will be assessed regularly in compliance with the California State Firefighter I Standards and with the Los Angeles County certification process for emergency medical technicians and paramedics. In order to be eligible for the Paramedical Technician certificate, the student must first complete the following requirements: Provide verification of Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1) certification within the last 12 months. Provide verification of at least 6 months experience as an EMT-1 in a pre-hospital setting. Complete Fire and Emergency Technology 15 or equivalent. Pass a medical examination according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard #1582. Furnish proof of rubella immunity, Tuberculosis (TB) test and Hepatitis B vaccine. In addition to the program prerequisites, it is recommended that students be eligible, through assessment or coursework, for ENGL 1Aand MATH 80.
